It’s 2AM again

…and I’ve only just made a start

It really is true when people say “There just isn't enough hours in the day…”

In an world of increasing speed, the pressure eventually mounts up. We all want to succeed in something. Sacrifices need to be made to achieve many goals. A constant battle to find that perfect balance between Social, Professional, Romantic, Self Care etc. Like the options-triangle where you can only choose two, but in most cases its more like a dodecahedron.

Once the “working day” is done, there are only a handful of hours left of the day to work on the many aspects of your personal dodecahedron before you need to start winding down to prepare for the next day, and being in this modern world of instant everything, its the perfect recipe for feelings of anxiety that you are not doing enough.

I want to read more books…

I want to work out twice a week…

I want to learn a new language…

I want to catch up on all those TV shows I've missed out on…

I want to work on my craft…

Our minds and bodies are limited. With such a vast array of tasks we want to complete or skills we want to hone, we can end up giving too little energy to each and end up feeling unaccomplished in all. I am guilty of this on a daily basis.

I have many passions and hobbies. Ones that I routinely neglect reluctantly. This has the inevitable knock on affect for that familiar old feeling of “not doing enough.” The truth is, most of us who feel this way are being way too hard on ourselves. The reason we don’t have the time is BECAUSE we are doing too much. I often make the “bad” decision to sacrifice a good nights sleep in favour of getting as much done as possible to offset some of that anxiety. While it works in which I DO get more done, sacrificing a good nights sleep will catch up with you eventually. That's where the burn out truly sets in…

I often find myself looking at the time and thinking “Well its 2AM again and i am only just making a start…” and it clearly isn’t healthy.

We all have to make sacrifices sometimes, but it would be wise if we made sure we wasn’t making the kind of sacrifice that ends up affecting the things we made the sacrifice for in the first place.

Its important to remind ourselves about our limited time, but not to feel anxious about. We need to remind ourselves in a way that we understand we can only do so much at any given time. Making a sensible plan can really ease the stress. One step at a time. That book you want to read… Why not put aside just half an hour next Tuesday? Then 10 minutes on Wednesday during your lunch break? Breaking it all up into digestible amounts to avoid feeling bloated in the brain.

It is absolutely possible to accomplish all the things we want to do. The most common problem we face is either sacrificing the wrong thing, or convincing ourselves that it all needs to be done “today”. It is funny reading this back before publishing because I have always been an expert in not taking my own advice… It makes me wonder if I just wrote all this to lecture myself!

Is it too late for a new years resolution? Absolutely not. A new years resolution is simply a “cut off” point that we give ourselves which just makes us feel like we have missed our chance to make some major changes.

I herby pledge to just try and get that good nights sleep as often as possible. I hope anyone else struggling with feeling “unaccomplished” can also do the same.

Just remember that we feel that we aren't doing enough because we are already doing too much.

Lets make some positive sacrifices from now on!

I often post about my thoughts of the day, often just using the platform to declutter my brain. It’s working wonders so far…
